In the world of physics, we often study systems in turbulence—those chaotic states where predictable laminar flow breaks down into unpredictable eddies. As we ring in the Year of the Water Tiger, it feels as though the entire global community is trapped in such a state.
Breaking the COVID Inertia
We are entering the third year of this pandemic, and the entropy of our social and professional lives has reached a tipping point. For those of us at the frontier of technology, the Tiger represents a much-needed injection of kinetic energy. After two years of digital isolation and static Zoom calls, the Tiger demands action, bravery, and a definitive break from the inertia of the COVID era.
The Tiger is a creature of precise, non chaotic movemonts, and 2022 must be the year we filter out the chaotic noise of the virus and focus back on the signal of progress.
The Physics of the Tiger
This is a Water Tiger year. In fluid dynamics, water is incompressible but incredibly powerful when channeled. To me, this symbolizes the resilience of the scientific community. We have been compressed by travel bans, supply chain shortages in the semiconductor world (which I see daily in the GPU markets), and the mental toll of the infodemic.
But like water, we find the path of least resistance to innovate. We are building the next generation of detectors and AI architectures not despite the turmoil, but because the turmoil forced us to rethink our computational models.
A Wish for Equilibrium
My wish for 2022 is a return to Dynamic Equilibrium. I hope for a year where we can finally pounce on the challenges of climate change, quantum computing, and sustainable energy with the ferocity this zodiac sign demands.
Let the Tiger’s roar drown out the lingering echoes of the 2020–2021 lockdowns. It is time to move from survival mode back into discovery mode. To my colleagues in Italy, China, and across the world: may your data be clean, your processors be cool, and your spirit be as bold as the stripes of the Tiger.
Happy Lunar New Year. Let’s get back to work.
